May the Fourth be with you! Star Wars day passed in fine form, with new looks at the cast of The Force Awakens from Vanity Fair. We do know a little more about the next installment in the Star Wars saga after Vanity Fair revealed the cover and behind-the-scenes photos from photographer Annie Leibovitz. She has been providing Vanity Fair with Star Wars photos since The Phantom Menace, adding a classic look and a sense of completion to the photos released this week. Her beautiful photographs revealed some long-anticipated information about the cast: Adam Driver will be playing the evil Kylo Ren, Lupita Nyong’o will portray the CGI-created pirate Maz Kanata, and that’s Gwendoline Christie inside the silver Stormtrooper armor of Captain Phasma of the First Order. Vanity Fair also showed a photograph of the “brain trust” behind The Force Awakens, director J. J. Abrams, producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, and composer John Williams. With a new step toward the release of Episode VII comes a new chance to get involved with the Force for Change: the Lucasfilm/UNICEF initiative is auctioning off some artists’ interpretations of stormtrooper helmets, with all proceeds going to Kid Power. Before Episode VII, the Rise of the Empire collection brings fans up to date with two novels set in the Dark Times, A New Dawn and Lords of the Sith, and includes three new short stories. John Jackson Miller, Jason Fry and Melissa Scott have penned new tales set around the same time period as the full-length books. Rise of the Empire goes on sale on Oct. 6. Nothing new was revealed about Rogue One this week, but one big change has come to the Anthology films: director Josh Trank departed the second Anthology, saying that “I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path.” The film will go ahead as planned, but a new director has not yet been announced. There is more Star Wars to come this summer, as it was recently announced that Rebels season two would premiere on Saturday, June 20. The two-part premiere, called “The Siege of Lothal,” will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Disney XD. Starwars.com also released a sneak peak of Kanan #2, in which the young Padawan  and his Master Depa Billaba face the aftermath of Order 66. Fans of The Clone Wars can find new adventures online after the Bad Batch arc was released on starwars.com on April 29. The episodes are incompletely animated, but fully voiced. At the panel during which they were shown at Celebration Anaheim, Dave Filoni said he had seen fans’ love for Echo and the other clones, and that the panel “fulfills a promise” he made to fans after Echo’s apparent death. Star Wars Day events popped up around the internet and beyond: Disney XD got into the spirit with Star Wars-themed episodes of Phineas and Ferb, Kickin’ It, and Lab Rats, and starwars.com made the first season of Rebels available to watch for free. Other sales and promotions from Her Universe, Del Rey, Disney, and many other brands have now finished. Although Star Wars day is done, fans now have a bit more to mull over in the months leading up to The Force Awakens.
